We’ve got a new variety on our hands and it’s not a super common one. It is under the psilocybe natalensis family that goes by “Yellow Umbo”. Wildly similar to psilocybe cubensis, but there are definitely differences between the two! I’ll be describing the characteristics on what P. Natalensis mushrooms in general are all about. On a side note, Liquid Myco does not condone the use or cultivation of said mushrooms, check your local laws and regulations.
Psilocybe natalensis mushrooms are very similar to psilocybe cubensis mushrooms. They contain the same alkaloid concentration; psilocybin, psilocin, & baeocystin. But what exactly sets them apart? Let me break it down for you guys!
History
Psilocybe Natalensis came from the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa dating back years ago. The genetic sequence was researched by a series of mycologists including Jochen Gartz, Michael Smith, Derek Reid, and Albert Eicker back in 1995. That’s where they had made their wonderful discoveries upon what is the now known “P. Natalensis” and not under the psilocybe cubensis species, but closely related.
Resilience is Key
Natalensis mushrooms are strong and resistant when it comes to contamination and disease issues. In the wild, the P. Natalensis mushrooms’ mycelium is rapid and aggressive compared to Psilocybe Cubensis and their anti-contamination compounds help them survive.
Specific Characteristics of Yellow Umbo
Yellow Umbo is a combination of a Psilocybe Cubensis and a Psilocybe Natalensis, how cool! Yellow Umbo mushrooms enjoy looking funky and swirly. Despite being attracted to light to promote their fruiting body and direction of growth, these mushrooms have a mind of their own. Their caps are roughly 2 inches and they are a beautiful white hue around the edge of the cap almost in an aura-descent style, and a yellow tip in the middle. Under their caps they have darker gray toned gills. Their stipes are 3-4 inches in size and can get a little squiggly when it comes to its growth, safe to say they are a fungi!
Final Thoughts
As we continue to research the great qualities that the P. Natalensis has to offer, its strength and resilience can make for a promising future with further cloning and isolation efforts. Each and every day there is something new to learn about mushrooms and I think that’s what keeps us so humble. Check out our new 10cc Yellow Umbo Spore Syringe as stated above and be a part of the spore research party! I wish everyone a wonderful day and a great rest of the week.
